Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bucs Beat SAGU-AIC 78-61 to Move to 2-1

The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team (2-1) got back on the winning track tonight, beating SAGU-AIC 78-61 at the PHHacility in Phoenix, Ariz.

"It's always nice to get a win," said Buccaneers head coach Jeff Fore. "Offensively we did some good things, we shot the ball really well and we saw with our perimeter game how explosive we can be."

The Bucs started slow again for the first few minutes, falling behind 5-0 before finding their sea legs and went on a 21-6 run for the remainder of the quarter to take a 10-point 21-11 lead.

The second quarter saw the Bucs put 22 points on board, but some defensive lapses allowed the Warriors to put up 15 points of their own to trail 43-26 at the intermission. Park Gilbert managed to shoot 43 percent (15-35) from the floor and 36 percent (9-25) from beyond the arc in the first half.

The second half was highly contested, as the Bucs only outscored the Warriors 36-33.  The Warriors shot 33 percent from the floor in both halves and only made two three-pointers all game, but the difference was at the free throw line.  The Warriors had 19 attempts from the charity stripe and made 12 which enable the Warriors to compete.

"Defensively. we are playing like we have concrete in our shoes." Said Fore. "A lot of that is because we've been off so much, but that's the one thing we really have to do is get back and get some fight in us defensively."

Sophomore Jenny Todd led the way was 11 points and had an all-around solid night on both ends of the floor.  Jasmine Kelly added 10 points and senior Marlene Salazar had 12 rebounds and five assists.  Destinee Vigil, Anna Laux, and Freshman Aubrey Avery all had nine points on the night.  Freshman Maddison Chappell made her debut tonight chipping in five points, two assists and three steals.

Park Gilbert now hits the road for a true test at Division I Dixie State on Saturday, December 12.  Game time is 3 p.m. MST.
