The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 50-point 93-43 victory over Stanton University this evening at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz. The Buccaneers snap a four-game losing streak to move to 3-4 on the season.
The last four games for the Buccaneers were all against ranked opposition and it took the Buccaneers a second to find their footing as they got off to a slow start, shooting 20 percent from the floor and only making four field goals in first frame. The Buccaneers found themselves in a position they did not foresee; trailing at the end of the quarter 10-9.
Head Coach Ben York implored his charges to up the intensity in the second quarter and they did just that, forcing 16 turnovers and improving their shooting percentage to 56 percent in the second stanza. The Bucs opened with an 18-0 run to start the quarter and finished with 34 points and held the Lady Elks to just four points for the quarter to lead 43-14 at halftime.
The Buccaneers dominated on the boards more than doubling the Elks on the glass in the first half. This included 15 boards on the offensive glass.
Park came out an won the third quarter as well but was not as dominant as it would have liked, outscoring Stanton 18-12 in the period. The Bucs would take it back up a notch in the fourth, scoring 32 points as they ran away with the game.
The Bucs forced 42 Elks turnovers and had 28 steals. The constant pressure the Park was able to apply wore down an opponent who only played seven players throughout the game. On the other side of the ledger, the Bucs suited up 14 players. All 14 saw action and all 14 put points on the board.
From the floor, Park shot 39 percent for the game, but only went 8-42 from three-point range as they could not quite find the range. The Bucs uncharacteristically struggled form the free throw line, shooting 53 percent and missing 17 free throws. Â
Park Gilbert played tonight without five players who missed the game due to injury. Hemani Kalia, Jacie Bunck, Camisha Fuson, Devae Willie and Kayly Honig all sat out, but it did not hurt the Bucs scoring tonight.
Alli Cummings and Larken Hoar led the team with 15 points each. Cummings scored her 15 points in just 14 minutes of play. Alynna Palacios corralled 14 rebounds, 10 of them were offensive boards.
Yuli Garcia and Symirah Gray each had four assists and Hannah Mask led the team with five steals.
Up next for the Bucs is their conference opener against Benedictine Mesa. The Redhawks are 2-1 on the season. The game commences at 12 p.m. at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz.
