RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The Park University Gilbert men's basketball team (9-16, 3-10) defeated the La Sierra University Golden Eagles (7-17, 0-13) by a score of 98-95, Tuesday night at the Darling Pavilion in Riverside, Calif.
The Buccaneers complete the season sweep over La Sierra in thrilling fashion, as guard Tanner Pate nailed the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. Just like in the first meeting this year, between these Great Southwest Athletic Conference rivals, this high-scoring contest could not be decided in regulation. The Bucs improve to 4-3 all-time against La Sierra.
A competitive first half saw the Golden Eagles take a one-point lead into the halftime break. LSU held a eight-point lead with a little over two-minutes remaining, but the Bucs closed out the half on a 9-2 run. La Sierra shot 53% from the field compared to Park-Gilbert's 44% field goal percentage.
The second half of play was another game of runs between these Great Southwest Athletic Conference foes. The Golden Eagles reestablished their eight-point lead with 12 minutes to go. The Bucs cut the lead back down to one point with nine minutes left before LSU brought it back to eight with six minutes remaining. The next three minutes were all Park-Gilbert as they took a three-point lead with roughly two minutes to go.
Crunch time came down to a pair of clutch three-pointers by both teams, that brought the score to 89-89 with 12 seconds remaining. The final possession was Park's as guard Toate Sika worked for a layup down low, but solid defense from the Golden Eagles brought this game to overtime.
Both teams stayed neck-and-neck as overtime progressed. As LSU took a 95-93 lead with a minute remaining, Pate began to take matters into his own hands. He assisted guard Mahlik Lindsey on a layup that tied things at 95 with 22 seconds remaining. Pate then grabbed a steal with four seconds left, and successfully pulled up from three-point land as time expired.
For the first time in program history, three Buccaneers scored at least 20 points in a single game. The top three scorers played at least 39 minutes, with Pate staying in the entire contest.
Sika led Park-Gilbert in scoring with 24 points off 69% shooting from the field, while also pulling down nine rebounds. Pate finished with 23 points, a season-high eight assists, five rebounds, and three clutch triples. Guard Issac Wood knocked down five three-pointers en route to a 21-point outing. Lindsey became the fourth player in this lineup with 15+ points as he logged 18 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
This game saw a total of 17 lead changes, nine for Park-Gilbert and eight for La Sierra.
Overall, Park-Gilbert shot 49% from the field and 43% from downtown while LSU shot 54% from the field and 40% from three-point land.
The Buccaneers return to the court this Thursday, Feb. 12 at 8:30 p.m. MST, when they hit the road for San Dimas, Calif., to take on the Life Pacific University Warriors (12-13, 3-10).
