The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team showed they still had plenty of life in them as they overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Life Pacific University 72-67 this evening at Mehl Court in San Dimas, Calif. With the win, the Bucs snap a three-game losing streak and move their record to 10-13 on the season and 5-9 in GSAC play.
This game could have gone the other way after a poor second quarter. Park trailed by three after the first quarter and then struggled mightily in the second stanza only scoring 10 points and shooting 33 percent from the floor.
The Bucs came out in the second half and exploded for 49 points. They cut the deficit to six by the end of the third quarter and then outscored the Warriors 26-14 in the final frame to secure a six-point victory.
In the fourth, it only took the Bucs 59 seconds to erase the six-point LPU lead to tie the game at 53. The score see-sawed to 58-all. From there the Bucs went on a 12-3 run to seeming put the game out of reach with four minutes remaining 70-61. But the Bucs would only score three points the rest of the game and Life would make it interesting, but could not take advantage of free throw opportunities down the stretch, shooting 4-9 from the charity stripe in the last four minutes.
The Bucs shot just 33 percent in the first half making nine field goals. The Bucs looked like a different squad in the second half making more shots from the floor in both the third (10) and fourth (11) quarters then they did in the first two quarters combined (9). They shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half.
The comeback was spurred by two veterans who only had three games remaining in their careers as this season comes to a close. Hemani Kalia (14) and Larken Hoar (10) combined for 24 second half points to pace the team after the two only scored three points in the first half combined.
Freshman Symirah Gray chipped in with 10 points off the bench. Jelissa Julmist led the team with nine rebounds and Yuli Garcia had four assists. Kalia also led the team with three steals.
The Bucs now return home to close out the 2026 season against the top two teams in the conference as Hope International (12-1) and The Master's (12-1) visit Arizona Athletic Grounds on Thursday, February 19 and Saturday, February 21. Thursday's contest commences at 5:30 p.m., followed by a noon start on Saturday. Â
